Sergeant Bakers are endemic to Australia. Found in temperate waters from central Western Australia around thesouthern coast and up the east coast as far as southern QLD. They can be found down to 250 metres but also inhabit shallow reefs.

 

Sergeant Bakers have a long tapered body, large head and jaws and eyes that are directly over the end of the mouth. They have a reddish brown colouring and are mottled with lighter areas. Males have extended rays at the front of the dorsal fin. Sergeant Bakers rest on the reef on their ventral fins waiting for the opportunity to strike at prey.
