Red Morwong

Common Name: Red Morwong
Scientific Name: Cheilodactylus fuscus
Family: Cheilodactylidae
Found: QLD, NSW, VIC
Maximum Length: 65 cm

Common characteristics of the Morwong family are large, fleshy lips, a forked tail fin and extended pectoral fin spines. Red Morwongs are common in NSW usually on rocky reefs down to around 30 metres. They are generally found in small groups though sometimes they will form larger aggregations.

Red Morwongs are a distinctive orangey brown on the upper half of their body and silver below. Juveniles are a silvery colour with thick, dark bands over their sides and across the dorsal fins.
