Caulerpa taxifolia Removal - North
Harbour Aquatic Reserve - Sun 3rd
What Happened on the Day?
The Caulerpa Removal event on Sunday 3rd April was very successful.
The
HarbourKeepers team of divers was picked up by theProDive boat in the
early afternoon. When they arrived at North Harbour Aquatic Reserve near
Manly they worked together to remove the invasive weed, Caulerpa taxifolia,
from the Harbour floor.
What is Caulerpa taxifolia?
The
aquarium strain of Caulerpa taxifolia is an invasive pest species that
has infested Sydney Harbour.
Different from the native strain, the aquarium strain is used as decorative
aquarium plant. It's invasion into oceans has created problems throughout
the world. It grows rapidly, greatly reduces local biodiversity and is
particularly threatening to native seagrass beds.
There is a need to control this invasive introduced weed so that measures
can be taken to minimise its impact on our precious harbour environment.
Removal of Caulerpa taxifolia
HarbourKeepers are needed to help remove this weed from the seafloor.
HarbourKeepers will be trained in the correct removal techniques for this
weed by a NSW Fisheries scientist who will be present on the day.

Bush Regeneration - Reef Beach, Balgowlah
Heights
Sun 17th
These monthly bush regeneration activities are a great chance to socialise
with your fellow HarbourKeepers, help look after Sydney Harbour and take
in the scenic views!
This month newcomers learnt new skills while regenerating the natural
bushland around Reef Beach and everybody made new friends while enjoying
the morning tea provided by the NPWS.
This really is a great location to get involved in bush regeneration.
There arent many places that you can enjoy some of the best views Sydney
Harbour has to offer while making a huge difference for the local environment.
HarbourKeepers volunteers can join the Reef Beach Volunteers on the first
Sunday morning of every month. You can come along to just one day or make
it part of your regular monthly Sunday activities.
Bush regeneration at this site is conducted in conjunction with the National
Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). NPWS provide training for beginners
so that everyone could get involved no matter what their level of experience.
To get involved in Reef Beach bush regeneration register
as a HarbourKeeper. Once registered you will receive regular email
newsletters about upcoming events, however if there is an event you are
interested in attending before you receive a newsletter contact Dave daver@marine.org.au
