Fish Biodiversity Surveys
- Sun 7th
Identifying which marine species live in Sydney Harbour and the abundance
of these species will assist in gaining an understanding of what lies
beneath the Harbour's surface.
The
HarbourKeepers fish biodiversity study on the 7th of August helped to
train up some of our less experienced divers as well as providing some
interesting diving for our more experienced HarbourKeepers.
Species observed by the HarbourKeepers were Old Wife, Mado, Blue Wrasse.
Some lucky divers were also rewarded with glimpses of Sun Fish and had
close encounters with Blue Gropers.
Conditions were perfect. Little swell, good visibility and a pretty reef.
We had some new HarbourKeepers along so the site was chosen for its ease
of accessibility. The dive started at 5 metres and went down to approximately
23 metres.
More Fish Biodiversity surveys will be conducted throughout the year.
Register as a HarbourKeeper so you can take part in these and other exciting
harbour events. Our full list of activities for 2005 can be found on our
Events page.
Scouts NSW and NPWS Bush Regeneration - Sun 14th
Once
again the Scouts NSW and National Parks and Wildlife Service collaborated
to undertake an exciting Harbour Island Bush regeneration event.
The Scouts scooted on their zodiacs to Clark Island on Sunday 10th of
August. The aim of the day? Tackle those weeds! Supervised by NPWS rangers,
the Scouts were able to remove metres and metres of the noxious weed Mother
of Millions. One scouts even pulled out a single plant that was seven
foot long! Clark Island will be breathing much more easily now thanks
to the Scouts, NPWS and HarbourKeepers.
The last event, held on World Evironment Day, June 5th 2005, was a huge
success and was the first in a program of island bush regeneration activities.
Bush Regeneration - Reef Beach, Balgowlah
Heights
Sun 21st
These monthly bush regeneration activities are a great chance to socialise
with your fellow HarbourKeepers, help look after Sydney Harbour and take
in the scenic views!
This month newcomers learnt new skills while regenerating the natural
bushland around Reef Beach and everybody made new friends while enjoying
the morning tea provided by the NPWS.
This really is a great location to get involved in bush regeneration.
There arent many places that you can enjoy some of the best views Sydney
Harbour has to offer while making a huge difference for the local environment.
