Events - August 2006
Fish Survey Training Workshop - Wed
9th and associated Fish Survey Training Dive - Sun 13th
It may be deep mid-winter but that's not enough to stop our intrepid
HarbourKeepers from surveying. Even two flooded drysuits and a (temporarily)
lost mask and snorkel could not put the dampers on a perfect sunny day
for the first of August's training dives. And if any of our wetsuited
divers were smirking when their drysuited colleagues got a drenching they
didn't let it show - much!
The Plunge Diving jetty has once again proved to be a home for many of
our target species. Yellowfin Bream and Tarwhine, Sawtail Surgeonfish
and Three - Bar Porcupinefish are mixed in with liberal quantities of
Eastern Hulafish and Black Spot Goatfish to make an awesome fish soup.
More elusive species can be found by those divers that venture farther
out from the pier.

Bush Regeneration - Reef Beach, Balgowlah
Heights
Sun 20th
These
monthly bush regeneration activities are a great chance to socialise with
your fellow HarbourKeepers, help look after Sydney Harbour and take in
the scenic views! Newcomers will learn new skills while regenerating the
natural bushland around Reef Beach.
Bush regeneration at this site is conducted in conjunction with the National
Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). NPWS provide training for beginners
so that everyone could get involved no matter what their level of experience.
To get involved in Reef Beach bush regeneration register
as a HarbourKeeper.
Fish Survey Training Workshop - Tues
22nd and associated Fish Survey Training Dive - Thurs 24th
August's
second training dive day was an opportunity for our volunteer surveyors
to achieve their 15 minutes of fame! Totally Wild came down to film our
surveying activities in order to make the HarbourKeepers Fish Biodiversity
Survey the key section of an upcoming program. Totally Wild presenter
and NPA~Marine SeaStar Jack Yabsley was the presenter on the day. Participants
were filmed preparing for dives and discussing their experiences after
the dive. Keep an eye on this website for the screening date or register
as a HarbourKeeper to receive email updates.
After their brush with fame our surveyors got down to business
and once again found a great mix of our target species. Several divers
saw some beautiful little White's Seahorses, perfectly blended into their
surroundings making them harder to see and all the more exciting to spot.
