Fish Survey Training Workshop - Wed 5th and associated Fish Survey Training Dive - Sun 9th

July's first HarbourKeepers training dives were held at Chowder Bay in Sydney Harbour and saw 8 keen HarbourKeepers become certified Fish Surveyors by gaining an AWARE - Fish Identification Specialty diver certification. Clear blue skies and a high tide made conditions perfect for a survey of the fish life beneath Plunge Diving's pier. An incredible density of fish was spotted including many good sized Yellowfin Bream and some Silver Trevally. Other notable residents include Red Morwong, White's Seahorses, plenty of Sydney Cardinalfish and a lone Three-bar Porcupinefish.

Our thanks go to Plunge Diving at Chowder Bay, Mosman for supplying the equipment and air fills for 2 HarbourKeepers training courses a month. Data gathered from these dives will be forwarded to the NSW BioNet database - a publicly accessible online database for marine researchers and managers - and to Project AWARE, the dive industry's leading nonprofit environmental organisation.

Bush Regeneration - Reef Beach, Balgowlah Heights
Sun 16th

HarbourKeepers and CoastKeepers who want to be involved in marine conservation - but don't want to get wet! - took part in our monthly bush regeneration project at Reef Beach. A big thankyou goes out to our dedicated bush regenerators!!.

Bush regeneration at this site is conducted in conjunction with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). NPWS provide training for beginners so that everyone can get involved no matter what their level of experience.

To get involved in Reef Beach bush regeneration register as a HarbourKeeper.

Scouts NSW Tree Planting Clark Island - Sun 23rd

Around 20-30 cubs will go to Clark Island and plant trees to begin the rehabilitation process. This work goes hand in hand with the removal of the weed, Mother of Millions, on Clark Island by Scouts in June. This enthusiastic and dedicated team of Scouts, Cubs, Venturers and Rovers are actively helping NPWS through HarbourKeepers to improve Clark Island.

By encouraging younger generations to care for our Harbour we are making sure that it will be in good hands well into the future.

Fish Survey Training Workshop - Tues 25th and associated Fish Survey Training Dive - Thurs 27th

Our second HarbourKeepers training day in July saw 7 more keen fish surveyors join the growing ranks of certified HarbourKeepers and CoastKeepers fish surveyors. Chowder Bay was the dive site and Plunge Pier again proved to be home to many of our 50 target species. Notable sightings included a Fortescue and several sightings of Yellow-finned Leatherjackets, Sawtail Surgeonfish, Yellowfin Bream and the quick to disappear Half-Banded Seaperch. Thanks go to Plunge Diving for their continued support of the HarbourKeepers Fish Survey project.

Since completing their AWARE - Fish Identification Specialty certification, three divers from this course have gone on to survey Little Manly and Fairy Bower. On one dive they spotted 31 of the 50 target species! Go the HarbourCreepers!!
