Events - June 2005
HarbourKeepers celebrated it's
first birthday in style on Sunday June 5th, World Environment Day.
Around
80 people took part in a range of activities right around the Harbour.
- Residents and HarbourKeepers were joined by Manly Mayor Peter MacDonald
and local Councilor Judy Lambert at a cleanup of Fairlight beach, Manly.
- ProDive and HarbourKeepers explored the Centurion Wreck near North
Head while conducting a fish biodiversity survey.
- Scouts NSW and National Parks and Wildlife Service undertook a HarbourKeepers
bush regeneration on Clark Island.
- HarbourKeepers were joined by National Parks and Wildlife Service
on the restricted access Goat Island to also do some bush regeneration.
After this rewarding work had been done, there was a birthday celebration
held on Goat Island with the magnificent Harbour Bridge as a backdrop.
The celebrations were attended by HarbourKeepers, Scouts, National Parks
and Wildlife Service, National Parks Association, The Deputy Director
of the Australian Museum and Leichhardt Council Deputy Mayor, Carolyn
Allen.
National Parks Association of NSW Executive Officer, Andrew Cox, praised
the growth of HarbourKeepers over the past year and expressed NPA's goal
of supporting and encouraging the HarbourKeepers program to flourish in
the years to come.
Ms
Allen then gave a brief talk about the environmental initiatives Leichhardt
Council has undertaken and expressed her desire to see HarbourKeepers
have a strong and productive future, both with Leichhardt Council and
with other agencies.
The celebrations culminated with the cutting of the HarbourKeepers cake
by Mr Cox and Ms Allen.
The day was a resounding success both for HarbourKeepers and the environment.

Bush Regeneration - Reef Beach, Balgowlah
Heights
Sun 19th
The HarbourKeepers and reef beach bush regenerators were among the lucky
people to spot some of the Humpback and Southern Wright whales cruising
past the spectacular heads on Sunday June 19th. The whales will be in
transit for a couple of months yet so if you haven't seen them this year
join the regular HarbourKeepers bush regenerators.
These monthly bush regeneration activities are a great chance to socialise
with your fellow HarbourKeepers, help look after Sydney Harbour and take
in the scenic views!
This month newcomers learnt new skills while regenerating the natural
bushland around Reef Beach and everybody made new friends while enjoying
the morning tea provided by the NPWS.
This really is a great location to get involved in bush regeneration.
There arent many places that you can enjoy some of the best views Sydney
Harbour has to offer while making a huge difference for the local environment.
