Marine Clean-Up - Sun 6th
Litter in Sydney Harbour is not only unsightly, but can also be environmentally
damaging. HarbourKeepers dived to help remove some of this rubbish from
the seafloor as part of Clean-Up Australia Day 2005.
HabourKeepers
volunteers were trained in the most environmentally sound techniques for
removing litter. In some cases marine debris becomes habitat for marine
life and therefore its removal could actually cause more harm than good.
HarbourKeepers participation in Clean Up Australia Day at Manly was our
largest event yet. Almost 60 HarbourKeepers came to clean up under the
water at Fairlight and Forty Basket beaches in Manly on Sunday 6th of
March. A multitude of rubbish was collected by the HarbourKeepers Clean
Up team who were diving, snorkelling, shore diving and on the land.
20
HarbourKeepers dived from the ProDive boat which was generously supplied
for free to help HarbourKeepers make the day a success. These divers removed
many kilograms of rubbish from the Harbour floor including an old, rusty
fish trap that had been abandoned with fish left inside. Luckily the HarbourKeepers
were able to free the fish before removing this dangerous obstacle from
the sensitive area it was found.
Other participants in the HarbourKeepers Clean Up Australia Day activities
were Underwater Research Group, Manly Environment Centre, Fairlight Community
Precinct and Manly Council. After the Clean Up, people enjoyed a barbeque
organised by Richard Hewitt of Fairlight Precinct.
Bush Regeneration - Reef Beach, Balgowlah
Heights
Sun 20th
The HarbourKeepers and reef beach bush regenerators were among the lucky
people to spot some of the Humpback and Southern Wright whales cruising
past the spectacular heads on Sunday June 19th. The whales will be in
transit for a couple of months yet so if you haven't seen them this year
join the regular HarbourKeepers bush regenerators.
These monthly bush regeneration activities are a great chance to socialise
with your fellow HarbourKeepers, help look after Sydney Harbour and take
in the scenic views!
This month newcomers learnt new skills while regenerating the natural
bushland around Reef Beach and everybody made new friends while enjoying
the morning tea provided by the NPWS.
This really is a great location to get involved in bush regeneration.
There arent many places that you can enjoy some of the best views Sydney
Harbour has to offer while making a huge difference for the local environment.
