1st ever HarbourKeepers Fish ID Workshop and
Dive
Sat 6th
HarbourKeepers hosted their first ever Fish Identification Workshop courtesy
of Willoughby Council on Saturday 6th April, 2006.
This
exciting new workshop was available to HarbourKeepers keen to get into
the water and take part in our recently launched Fish Survey Dives. This
workshop was lead by Dave Roe, a highly experienced diver who has worked
for many years in the marine tourism and dive industry.
Divers learnt about each of the 50 marine fish species used in HarbourKeepers
Fish Surveys and familiarised themselves with the survey methodology and
dive slates used to record the information during the dives.
So
they could use their new skills straight away, HarbourKeepers arranged
a dive for its 12 participants immediately after the workshop at Sugarloaf
Bay. This site was selected by Willoughby Council as its marine life had
never been surveyed here and therefore remained a mystery to the council.
By going out to this rarely dived area, HarbourKeepers were able to provide
the council with valuable information about what lives in the area so
that they can better understand and protect this marine life in the future.
Marine
life sighted on the dive included:
Sydney Cardinalfish
Eastern Hulafish
Yellowfin Bream
Yellowtail Scad
Luderick
Stripeys
Silver batfish
Old Wife
Mado
Six-Spine Leatherjacket
(For information on each of these species pleasevisit our fish
gallery)
Following
the dive, our HarbourKeepers recorded their information onto data sheets
and discussed their results with each other and the film crew who covered
the day.
A special thanks to Willoughby Council for their support of the day!
