Events - October 2006
Fish Survey Training Workshop - Thurs
5th and associated Fish Survey Training Dive - Sun 8th
Well the elements have beat us again: seemingly perfect conditions
on Sunday changed in the space of minutes due to an abrupt and very strong
wind that put an uncomfortable looking swell under the Plunge Diving Pier
and caused all sorts of problems for several boats at anchor in Chowder
Bay. It was very soon apparent that diving would be cancelled for the
second course in a row. HarbourKeepers may be intrepid, but they are not
reckless and all our surveyors learn that safety comes first on all Fish
Survey dives.
Normal training will resume as soon as the elements allow.

Dives are held courtesy of Plunge Diving and the Environmental
Trust. See our supporters section for more

HarbourKeepers on Totally Wild - Wed
11th
Look
out for HarbourKeepers conducting a Fish Biodiversity Survey on Totally
Wild, Channel 10 at 4pm. The Totally Wild film crew and presenter Jack
Yabsley came down to Chowder Bay to film HarbourKeepers as they learnt
how to conduct Fish Survey dives. HarbourKeepers will be the main feature
of the program with footage of divers preparing for dives and underwater
footage of some of our target species. Jack is a committed SeaStar and
keen supporter of marine conservation.
Bush Regeneration - Reef Beach, Balgowlah
Heights
Sun 15th
These
monthly bush regeneration activities are a great chance to socialise with
your fellow HarbourKeepers, help look after Sydney Harbour and take in
the scenic views! Newcomers will learn new skills while regenerating the
natural bushland around Reef Beach.
Bush regeneration at this site is conducted in conjunction with the National
Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). NPWS provide training for beginners
so that everyone could get involved no matter what their level of experience.
To get involved in Reef Beach bush regeneration register
as a HarbourKeeper. Once registered you will receive regular email
newsletters about upcoming events, however if there is an event you are
interested in attending before you receive a newsletter contact Dave:

Fish Survey Training Workshop - Tues
17th and associated Fish Survey Training Dive - Sun 22nd
Training Dives resumed this Sunday with good conditions above the
surface and fair but murky conditions below. Not so murky that our student's
couldn't spot many of the Fish Survey's target fish. Many juvenile Mado
and Silver Sweep can now be found around the pilings of the Plunge Diving
Pier and Sawtail Surgeonfish, Three-bar Porcupinefish and White-ear Parma
are ever present. A Seahorse was found perfectly camaflauged amongst some
aquatic palnts but didn't prove to be White's Seahorse and so didn't get
counted. We now have another 7 volunteers to add to our growing team of
people that have become trained HarbourKeepers Fish Surveyors.
For information on the surveys click

Dives are held courtesy of Plunge Diving and the Environmental
Trust. See our supporters section for more
details.
