Clean Up the World Weekend - Sun 18th
Litter in Sydney Harbour is not only unsightly, but it can also be
environmentally damaging. HarbourKeepers were at various locations around
Sydney Harbour this Clean Up the World Weekend participating in a selection
of activities to help make our Harbour a cleaner and more beautiful place.
Kayak and Foreshore Clean Up
NSW
Scouts played a valuable role as HarbourKeepers last Sunday when they
took to the water in kayaks along Parramatta River to clear rubbish from
the water and its surrounding mangroves and beaches.
Venurers, Scouts and Cubs also worked from the HarbourKeepers base at
Putney Park where rubbish was collected from around the park in what turned
out to be a fun and very productive day. HarbourKeepers from the NSW Scouts
collected a huge 15 bags of garbage, from both the banks of Parramatta
River and Putney Park.
Thanks goes to the Scout environment team who are working with HarbourKeepers
to provide meaningful activities that educate our youth about their local
environment.

Dive Clean Up
A group of divers cleaned up the seafloor around Fairlight which is
known for being a hotspot for rubbish accumulating.
The
dive was courtesy of Pro Dive, who generously donated their award-winning
vessel Sealife V for the event.
Pro Dive dive equipment was provided for those who don't have their own
so it was a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the Harbour and an
afternoon with Pro Dive - for free!
The
HarbourKeepers removed 10 bags of rubbish from the seafloor at
Little Manly. Rubbish from this dive included a fire extinguisher, watering
can and a full bottle of champagne!
Weed Clean Up
HarbourKeepers
enjoyed spectacular views of Sydney Harbour whilst helping to look after
the Harbour foreshores.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service provided training, tools and
morning tea to volunteers who wanted to get involved in looking after
our Harbour's bushland near the water's edge.
This event was part of monthly bush regeneration events at Reef Beach,
Manly
Georges Head Bush Regeneration
- Fri 23rd
Volunteers from the Westpac and BT Financial corporations spent Friday,
September 23rd planting various types of vegetation at George's Head.
All of the plant species are endemic to the area, and were collected locally.
Approximately 700 individual trees were planted. The bush
regeneration coordinated by HarbourKeepers and Sydney Harbour Federation
Trust was a tremendous success with a little help from the rain over the
weekend. Peter Jensen of Harbour Trust oversaw the event; he was quite
pleased with the results, referring to the volunteers as "a good
bunch, and very efficient." The ten volunteers were very enthusiastic
and did an excellent job. Their efforts were greatly appreciated, and
likewise they all made a point to thank HarbourKeepers representatives
and Peter Jensen for the opportunity.
The day was the first step in opening Sydney Harbour Federation
Trust lands to public access. The area was quite weedy and there is still
a fair amount of work to be done, but it was a good start in improving
the ecological and visual aspects of the area.
